When I announced last summer that I was heading off on a road trip for ten days, I wasn’t surprised at the reaction: Shock. Concern. Worry. Even pursed lips and a shake of the head.

Surprised? I wasn’t. It was a pretty crazy idea for a single mom with two kids to have. Six days in a car, traveling? With a toddler and a teen?

Ah, but I had a plan, and it was one that made our family vacation a real treat. Here’s what we did to keep that travel time fun and safe:

  • We planned where we were going ahead of time. We knew how to get there, had detailed maps at our disposal, and used every tool to know which stops, cities and attractions there were in between each overnight stop.
  • We decided how long each leg of the trip would be. With a toddler in the car, it was unrealistic to expect her to be able to handle long drives with only short stops. So we broke our trip down into six-hour legs, with at least a two-hour break in between each three-hour driving period.
  • We made sure that each break we took included a full meal and either one attraction or an overnight stay. That meant we had something to see and do each day, which made each leg of our journey fun and exciting.
  • We prepared ourselves well each time we knew we were getting into the car. That meant we made sure everyone used the washroom, we had snacks and drinks in the car, and there were toys, books and games handy to keep the boredom level of long drives low.
  • With some good foresight and careful planning to make our road trip pleasant and comfortable, we ended up having a great time. We got to explore several attractions and tourist “musts”, making the most of what would otherwise be just one long, uncomfortable drive.
